Rounders Night With Fairbairns
Posted on 26th June 2008
Over the past couple of seasons Crosby Cricket Club have had a get together with our sponsor Fairbairns Private Bank, involving a friendly rounders match followed by something to eat.
This has proved very successful and we are having another evening along similar lines this year, which will take place at Crosby on Wednesday 23 July, starting at 6.30 pm.
It is always a well supported and popular night, so hopefully many of you will be able to attend this year.
Please let your captains know if you are coming so we can get an idea of numbers for the catering.
Juniors please let Gareth or Trevor know if you will be there.

Under 11s Victories
Posted on 15th June 2008
Congratulations to the Under 11 team which last night won both their opening games of the season down at Cronkboune CC
First match was against Cronkbourne C. Batting first Cronkbourne struggled against a good bowling attack and Will Broadhead bowled a maiden over. Tight fielding restricted Cronkbourne to 76 runs.Crosby's batsmen soon made light of this score and fine batting by James Kelly and David Lovelady secured a comfortable win with crosby ending on 104.
Second match was against Finch Hill. This time Crosby batted first and fine batting by the whole team ensured a good total of 91 runs. Again Will Broadhead and James Kelly performed well with the bat and well supported by David Lovelady, the Hastie boys (Jonathan and Chris), Adam Midghall, Kieran Cawte, Thomas Karran and Daniel Tettersall.
In response Finch Hill struggled against some fine bowling by all the boys and in particularly two superb catches by James Kelly (yes him again !!) which restricted Finch Hill to just 71.
Next week the Under 11 matches move down to Crosby's ground and let's hope the winning streak continues.
Crosby into Tinker Cup Semi Final.
Posted on 9th June 2008
Crosby moved into the semi final of the Tinker cup beating Peel on Sunday. Winning the toss again Crosby batted and made 203 for 5. Simon Watson made another century (108 not out) and further contributions were made by Kevin Kniveton (27) and Jack Rowlands (27). Despite an early breakthrough by Mike Walker, Peel made a good start and with Russel Miller going well Crosby's total looked in danger. However, Jacob Hicklin joined the attack and he found one that kept low to account for Russel Miller. Dave Picken took three and Jacob took four as Peel ended up 90 all out. Worthy of note was an impressive debut of Crosby's new signing Andy Brown who bowled well but was unlucky not to pick up a wicket.
Record Tumble in Standard Bank Premiership Match Against Peel
Posted on 9th June 2008
Crosby made 305 for 2 in the sunshine against Peel on Saturday being the clubs highest ever score on a Saturday. Simon Watson once again led the way hitting 128 whilst Kevin Kniveton became only the fourth ever Crosby batsman to score a century by hitting 139 not out. The partnership between Simon and Kevin was 263 quite possibly a Standard Bank Premiership record. Peel went after the score but wickets fell regularily and they were all out for 137 despite a good last wicket stand that frustrated the Crosby bowlers. Pick of the bowlers were Jack Rowlands (3-17) and Floris Venter (4-15). Jacob Hicklin also picked up a couple of wickets and Asanka de Silva got one.
First team win first Karren league game.
Posted on 28th May 2008
Crosby won their first Karren league game by beating Valkyres by 40 runs following disappointing defeats to Ramsey and Cronkbourne. Simon Watson made a stylish 58 in Crosby's total of 169. Jacob Hicklin continues to impress with the ball, taking three wickets and Nick Moffitt (under 13) showed why he will be a star of the future with another three wickets. Pick of the bowlers however was Oliver Swales as Valkyers were bowled out for 129.

Level 1 Coaching Courses
Posted on 05th February 2008
Level 1 Coaching Course - 3rd and 4th May (provisionally) 2008
The last Level 1 course was run over 12 months ago and was crammed with players / parents from Castletown CC and Cronkbourne CC. If Crosby are to seriously compete against the likes of Cronkbourne and Castletown (who by location have far bigger catchments areas for recruiting youngsters) we need more coaches at the club.
To give you a flavour, Cronkbourne now have over 12 registered coaches who consistently help out with the various youth sides. Castletown have over 10 active coaches involved with their youth sides. This is the reason why these two clubs can regularly accommodate 40+ kids at their training sessions and put out two sides for their U11, U13 and U15. It's not just senior players that are their Level 1 coach. There are a number of parents and teenagers involved. Anyone over 16 years of age can take this course and by way of example the last Level 1 course was made up of a number of Cronkbourne's U17 players who all qualified (eg Max Stokoe, Alistair Slack, Kane Dooley etc). As a parent it is also a good "bonding" opportunity to get involved with their child and watch them develop in the sides.
Following the departure of Mark Johnson, Crosby now only have two qualified coaches actively involved in the Club (Trevor Baker and I. Consequently Crosby CC has been the main instigators in getting the IOMCA to agree to bring over a UK coach to run this Level 1 course. We now need to make sure that we get as many Crosby players / parents involved. From memory the course can accommodate up to 10 people. You do not have to an existing expert in cricket to be a Level 1 coach. Level 1 is all about engaging and encouraging the youngsters in the basic principals if cricket. The tutor goes through each aspect of the game and it is an excellent course.
It would be nice to get a number of volunteers (anyone 16+ years of age) as the more coaches we have the easier it is to get a successful youth set up at the club.
Please advise Kevin or Gareth Rowlands if you are interested. Earlier the better as I am sure other clubs will be looking to nominate names.

Crosby Golf Day
Posted on 10th September 2007
In excellent weather the 4th Crosby Cricket Club golf competition was held at Douglas Golf Club on Saturday 8 September 2007. The usual collection of dodgy handicaps were set and Skins led off the 20 plus competitors. The defending champion, the Onchan Express, started well but without the technology of the others fell away at the later holes. Jack Rowlands was playing well but couldn't handle the pressure and blew it after scoring 19 points on the first nine holes. Richad MacNee kept the pressure on but he too fell away at the later stages. Glen Bannister managed somehow to play his ball down toward the 4th tee whilst playing off the 5th one !!! John "the new bandit" Snelling emerged from a slow start to score an unbelievable 28 points on the last nine to take the title (43 points) and the trophy. Oliver Broadhead played well to score 37 points and take second place on a count back from third placed man, Kevin Quine. Last place on the day went to Gareth Rowlands with a pathetic 15 points.
The club would like to thank Douglas Golf Club for their excellent hospitality.

Crosby beaten by Castletown
Posted on the 6th August 2007
Crosby were beaten by Castletown on Saturday to end a recent good run of form. The Crosby skipper lost the toss again (he has failed to win one all season !!) and Castletown elected to bat. Although they lost a couple of early wickets Gareth Morris hit an aggressive 126 before finally being caught behind. Castletown were bowled out for 270 in the 43rd with Nick Wasley and Danny Kniveton getting three wickets each. Crosby made 218 for 8 in reply with Simon Watson hitting another century (100 not out). Wickets fell around him and Crosby never really looked like challenging the score set by Castletown. If only some catches had been held but nevertheless not a bad performance from the team against the league champions.
End of Season Win
Posted on 1st August by The Onchan Express
Crosby ended their Cain league season with a fine win against Ramsey to continue some recent good form. Put into bat Simon Watson (79) and Kevin Kniveton (61) made a great start before Kevin was bowled by Oliver Webster with the score on 129. Danny (12 not out) helped raise the score to 185, Simon being out just before the close of the innings. In reply Mike Walker had Oliver Webster caught in the first over and wickets fell regularily after that. Nick Wasley, Mike Walker and Mike Duchars all took two wickets as Ramsey finished on 95 for 8.
Crosby Records Tumble
Posted 30th July 2007
A Crosby (and Karran League) record opening partnership of 249 runs between Simon Watson (151 not out) and Ricky Kniveton (74) helped Crosby set a total of 265. This is the highest score Crosby have ever made and is the biggest ever opening partnership in the Standard Bank league.
In reply Valkyres scored quickly but wickets fell and at 70 for 4 Crosby were cruising to victory. However, Nat Elliott (53) and Keith Brew (53 not out) built a big patnership which threatened Crosby's total. Once Nat was bowled by Oliver Swales Crosby effectively closed out the game with Valkyres finishing on 212 for 7. There were good bowling performances from Mike Walker (3 for 32) and Oliver Swales (3 for 25) but far to many wides were bowled by Crosby. To view the scorecard

Two Dates for the Social Calender
29th July 2007
We have two club social occasions coming up for your diaries!
Firstly we will be having a night with our sponsors Fairbairns, as we did last year on Wednesday August 15. This will again be a friendly rounders match at the ground, followed by food and a few drinks. Everyone is welcome, including family etc.
Secondly the annual golf competition is pencilled in for Saturday 8 September. This is th third year that this cup has been played for and its arguably the most keen and bitter tournament that is played all season. All the dirty tricks come out and everyone will be out to beat the current holder - Dave "The oldest swinger in town" Picken. My money is on that athelete Gareth Rowlands
Danny Kniveton takes player of tournament award at ECC Under-19's in Jersey
Congratulations to Danny Kniveton for winning the Player of the Tournament award at the U19 ECC tournament in Jersey. Danny turned in tremendous performances during the week long tournemanet. In their win against Israel danny scored 35 not out and had bowling figures of 5-20. In their win against Germany Danny scored 58 runs (from 70 balls). Againt jersey Danny top scored with 25 runs and in their final match aainst Guernsey he scored 17 runs and turned in an useful bowling spell of 2-28.
Also congratulations to the other Crosby players who played at the tournament - Ricky Kniveton (Captain), Ollie Swales, Andrew Turner and Ross Berry and a great result for the squad to win the "Spirit of Cricket" award.
Tinker Cup 1993 - Crosby's Memorable Year
For all those oldies at the club who harp on about the 1993 team who won the Tinker Cup (our only Senior A team win) the undermentined should roll back the years:
1993 - it was the 1st XI's progress in the main knockout competition, the Tinker Cup, which provided one of Crosby's most memorable achievements.
The semi-final involved a visit to Ramsey, who were the current Tinker and Cain Cup holders from 1992. Batting first, Crosby piled up the runs, 186 for 5 - Ramsey being bowled out for 98. This enabled Crosby to reach the final for the first time in the Club's history, where they would face Finch Hill, who beat Malew in the other semi-final.
Crosby went into the 1993 Tinker Cup Final as the biggest underdogs of all time. The situation seemed even worse due to the absence of Crosby's leading run scorer that season, Rupert Worsdale, while Finch Hill welcomed the return of Jamie Tomlinson, who had spent the season with Northamptonshire.
T
he venue for the Final was Cronkbourne's ground at Tromode, and a large crowd gathered, mostly from Crosby! After winning the toss, Crosby decided to bat first, an unexpected decision which seemed to surprise Finch Hill.
Crosby's early batsmen played well, with Rona Bell again in good form, making 44 and receiving support from Nick Watson (brother of current player Simon Watson) and Glen Bannister.
However, from 94-3, Crosby collapsed to 109 all out; a very modest total in view of the Finch Hill batting which had produced 238 runs in the semi-final without Jamie Tomlinson!
Finch Hill started confidently, but wickets started to fall as all the Crosby bowlers and fielders did their part.
The turning point of the match came after Finch Hill's skipper, Jack Yardley, had been adjudged not out when the ball was "caught" just over the boundary, and the resulting 6 runs moved Finch Hill's score to 88-6.
The next ball he tried to emulate the feat and was caught, with another wicket falling next ball. In fact, Crosby took the last 4 wickets without conceding a run to win the Tinker Cup for the first time in the Club's history by 21 runs.
An added bonus was that Ronan Bell received the Man of the Match award for his fine batting and an excellent catch.
I think all the young lads have heard about the Crosby win and its still good to see that Glen still turns out for the club and Quiner (who was 12th Man) has made it to the loft position of Club Secretary!!
New Mower
The Club has finally taken delivery of its new mower which is a beast of a thing and makes mincemeat of the grass. Instead of spending four hours cutting the field it now takes less than an hour and a half. The only problem is that its got all kinds of sexy gizmos and only Kevin Quine and Dave Picken are the only ones that can use it. Seriously though we could do with more volunteers for the field maintenance and Kevin / Dave are more than happy to spend time showing you the ropes. The only issue we now have is that the Strimmers Association led by Gareth Rowlands are a bit miffed that they do not have a new strimmer and have to make do with the old one in the garage.
Hat-Tricks !!!
The club now have three players who have had a hat trick this year. Terry Crook got a hat trick in the Cain league playing for the B team against Ramsey A. This second hat trick goes to Ross Berry who got his hat trick for the C team against Vagabonds down at Nobles Park. After Ross first over in the match Valkyres were 0 - 4 !!!. The third hat trick hero is Dave Quayle who got his hat trick playing for the B team. Well done to all three players.
Tinker Semi-Final
Crosby unfortunately fell 17 runs short in a great run chase against Ramsey in the Tinker semi final on Sunday 8 July.Ramsey won the toss and made 252 for 8 in their 40 overs. Once again Crosby dropped crucial catches (Danny it was a dolly !!) at key moments but nevertheless there were a couple of excellent knocks from Eddie Cleator and Ollie Webster.
In reply Crosby started well and yet again Simon Watson led the chase with a magnificant knock of 117 not out (which is the second highest score by a Crosby player ever). He was ably assisted by Nick Wasley, Ricky Kniveton and Danny Kniveton. Sadly the score was just too high and Crosby ended on 235 for 5 in their 40 overs. A great effort by the team.
Karren League Match
Crosby A team won its league match on Saturday 7th July against Valkyres. A great opening spell by Ross Berry reduced Valkyres to 7 for 2 but then Will Wood hit an excellent 94 before edging one to the wicket keeper off Oliver Swales. Valkyres were eventually all out for a competitive 173. In reply Simon Watson and Danny Kniveton had an opening stand of 124. Simon's luck was in as the ball hit the stumps but did not dislodge the bail.. Simon? was eventually out for a splendid 81 and Danny scored 39. Ricky Kniveton (22 not out) and Jamie Johnston (12 not out) saw Crosby home after Jack Rowlands going in at number 4 bat decided to shouler arms to a ball pitched on middle stump and ............it smashed middle stump. A lovely golden duck.

IOM Squad Selections - Crosby Players
Isle of Man Under 19 - Congradulations to the five Crosby players selected to play for the IOM in the European U19 Division 2 tournament to be held in Jersey at end of July. The five are Ricky Kniveton (who will also captain the side), Danny Kniveton, Ross Berry, Andrew Turner and Oliver Swales.
Isle of Man Under 15 - Congradulations to the four Crosby players selected to play for the IOM in the European Under 15 tournament to be held in La Manga, Spain at the end of August. They are Jack Rowlands (who will be vice captain), Jamie Johnston, Alex Wilson and Jacob Hicklin.
Isle of Man Under 13 - Congratulations to the two Crosby players selected for the Under 13 tour to Guernsey at the end of august. They are Damien Baker and Nick Moffitt. A special mention to Nick as this is his first year with Crosby (and playing with a hard ball) and we are delighted that he has progressed so well.
Good luck to all the players in their respective tours.
Under 15's Close Victory
17 June 2007
Today the Under 15 side played Finch Hill at home, managing a win with one ball remaining. After winning the toss we decided to put them into bat first. Our bowling started well and we gained a couple of early wickets. However we failed to dismiss Andy Brown who went on to hit 47, before being out LBW to Thomas Whiteway. The rest of Finch Hill players scored 11 between them but with a total of 23 extras their final score was 85.
Crosby's batting got off to a poor start. The first victim of the Finch Hill bowling attack was Jack Rowlands, with a second-ball duck. Two balls later Jacob Hicklin (aka Tubes) was bowled golden duck

. Next was Damien Baker who ran himselft out also for a duck. Two more wickets fell and Crosby were 18-4, things were looking grim. Callum Watson then retired hurt on 3 and it was then left to Alex Wilson and young Tom Whiteway to steady the innings. Tom and Alex played sensible cricket and slowly but surely brought Crosby back into the game. Tom was unlucky to be run out when the score was on 70. Nick Moffitt scored 3 leaving Crosby needing 5 runs to win off the last over. We successfully did it with one ball left.
Congratulations to Alex Wilson for his 28*.
