Crosby travelled to Jersey at the weekend for a pre-season tour, taking in two games against Sporting Club Francais , one of the leading sides in Jersey , packed with six island players and joined by other island players including Ryan Driver the former Lancashire professional and all rounder who guested for SCF
On Saturday in superb conditions the clubs contested a 40 over match for the Fairbairn Private Bank Cup, kindly donated by the sponsors of both clubs.
SCF batted first and were made to fight hard for their runs, with opening bowler Nick Wasley bowling a superb spell of 1 for 17 off his 8 overs. At 130 for 4 after 30 overs the match was evenly poised. However the last 10 overs proved costly as SCF aided by powerful hitting from Ryan Driver who scored 85 ended up at 233 all out in the 40th over. There were a couiple of wickets a piece for Gareth Rowlands , Dave Picken, Asanka de Silva and Danny Kniveton.
Chasing 234 to win Kevin Kniveton went on the attack and blasted a stylish 53. However SCF were able to call on their main Jersey bowling line up and this proved too much for the Crosby batsmen who collapsed from 72 for 2 to 87 all out.
Sunday saw a more even contest over 20 overs. Again SCF batted first and this time Martyn Oates was the pick of the Crosby bowling with 4 for 16 of 3 overs. He was assisted by some excellent catching as SCF were dismissed for 116.
As the weather closed in Crosby moved past 50 but were 5 wickets down when rain stopped play. After the rain interval Crosby had to pick up the attack on a greasy surface and despite a hard hitting 37 from Mark Johnson and 17 from Floris Venter the run rate contuinued to increase. With 16 required from the last over and with the stalwarts Colin Kniveton and Mark Quinn at the crease it proved too much. Crosby finished on 107- 8 losing by 9 runs.
The tour was an excellent way to warm up for the season and playing against a side which would have given the IOM X1 a stiff test was was certainly a wothwhile experience.
We would like to thank our sponsors Fairbairn Private Bank for donating the trophy and its hoped that this will be a bi annual event.
